Arnela, better known as Ela, was a teacher on Corvo when the government built The Wall around the village and the fields. In just one night, she was cut off from her family on Alameda. Alameda is a small village on the Escravitude outskirts that became into a Grey Area at the same time that Corvo into a Dark Zone. She saw how the people of Corvo go insane in the complete dark. And worse than that, Ela had to see how many kids and older people died frozen or sick. As a teacher, she knew about the meigas (witches) on the local folklore and how they made potions and ointment with natural elements. On the library of the church, Ela found books about old witchcraft, where she discovered that many witches used the placenta to create ointments to cure sores, and that was the beginning of everything. That is how she built her first Rite, the Ánimas, a group of Devotees that saw her as a saint when she started to cure people. Then, when the GCP scavengers began to appear to rob the people, she decided to take action. She took the sick people from the sanatorium and using drugs to get them worse she created her second Rite, the Nothings. Thanks to that, GCP stopped bother Corvo and draw their Yellow Route. Ela decides to leave that route alone as a silent deal with the GCP. And to make it more clear, she drew the Red Route.
In 1984, when Jacob visit Alameda, Ela is there already since the government eliminate the Grey Areas and abandoned part of The Wall, building a new one closer to the city. When she came back to her village, Ela had a different way of seeing things. The people of Alameda still had electricity, radio, and Diaries, but starter to preach about “the real light” and the “blasphemies” of the electrical light. She used the Animas to control the village, and then she created her last Rite, Meigas. So, when Jacob arrives, she is already in control of the whole area.
